Nicknamed the “Garden of God” or “Bustani ya Mungu” by locals, this park is famous for its vibrant floral display that covers vast montane grasslands each spring. Getting There

Reaching Kitulo National Park requires a bit of planning but is certainly worth the effort.

By Road: The park is accessible by road from Mbeya or Njombe. Regular buses and private taxis run from Mbeya to Matamba village, the nearest entry point to the park. Expect about a 3-hour journey on a mix of paved and dirt roads, offering beautiful countryside views.

Though remote, Kitulo National Park’s seclusion is part of its charm, creating a peaceful sanctuary away from the busier safari destinations.

 Size and Landscape

Kitulo National Park spans approximately 412 square kilometers and sits at an altitude of 2,600 meters above sea level. Located on the Kitulo Plateau, this park is characterized by sprawling montane grasslands, patches of forest, and rolling highland hills. Unlike typical savannah parks, Kitulo’s lush green plains bloom with a dazzling array of wildflowers, creating a stunning contrast with the surrounding rugged terrain.

Kitulo is often compared to a botanical wonderland, with its unique ecosystem attracting an impressive variety of flora and fauna. During the rainy season, the landscape explodes with colors as wildflowers of all shapes and hues cover the grasslands in a breathtaking display.

 Climate

Kitulo National Park experiences a cool and temperate climate due to its elevation:

Wet Season (November to April): This is when Kitulo truly comes to life, with heavy rains that blanket the landscape in a sea of wildflowers. The temperature stays mild, but rain showers are frequent, so visitors should come prepared with waterproof gear.

Dry Season (May to October): The drier months are cooler, especially at night, with less rain and a more subdued floral display. The dry season, however, offers excellent conditions for hiking and birdwatching.

Kitulo’s cool climate makes it a refreshing destination, especially during the dry season when many parts of Tanzania are hot and humid.
